Repeatedly clicking update rarely fixes a driver that fails for the same reason. Identify which stage failed: download, extraction, installation, device start or post-reboot initialization.
Failure 1: Download Does Not Complete
Check:
- internet connection;
- available disk space;
- firewall/proxy;
- temporary storage;
- whether the download restarts from zero repeatedly.
Failure 2: Package Downloads but Will Not Install
Possible causes:
- wrong architecture;
- hardware mismatch;
- Windows version not supported;
- administrator permission problem;
- another installer is active;
- pending restart;
- existing package conflict.
Restart Windows before making complicated changes. A pending Windows Update can create confusing installation errors.
Failure 3: Installation Says Success but the Device Still Fails
Check Device Manager. The driver may be installed but the hardware may report an error code. The root cause could be:
- device failure;
- firmware issue;
- dependency on another chipset/platform component;
- incompatible driver branch.
Failure 4: Windows Is Worse After the Update
Stop trying newer packages. Roll back to the previous state, verify stability and then decide whether a different version is necessary.
Use the Hardware ID
When the displayed device name is vague, Device Manager’s Hardware Ids property is more precise than guessing from marketing names.
Avoid Force-Installing an Incorrect Driver
Windows provides manual methods that can bypass normal matching. Do not use them merely to make an installation “succeed.” A driver that can be forced into place is not necessarily correct for the device.
