Printers combine drivers, Windows printing services, network discovery and device-specific software. That means a failed print job is not automatically a driver problem.
Update the Printer Driver When
- Windows detects the printer but reports a driver error;
- printing stopped after a Windows upgrade;
- a new printer feature is unavailable;
- the installed package is for the wrong model;
- the printer appears as an unknown device.
Check These Before Replacing the Driver
- printer power/status;
- USB cable or network connection;
- correct default printer;
- paper/ink/toner errors;
- Windows Print Spooler;
- duplicate stale printer entries;
- network address for Wi-Fi/Ethernet printers.
Universal vs Full-Feature Drivers
Some printers can use a generic or universal package for basic printing. Scanning, duplex configuration, ink monitoring or device utilities may need the manufacturer’s full software.
